Tijdens zijn militaire dienst in Duitsland zag Cash de film Inside The Walls of Folsom Prison. Hierop baseerde hij zijn Folsom Prison Blues een track is van zijn debuutelpee Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar. Op 13 juni 1968 trad Cash zelf op in Folsom State Prison, California (zie locatie). Ook hiervan werd een album van gemaakt.
